Bittersweet Limbo

After hearing the rough draft of my song “A Love That Feels Right: Friendship“, this one friend of mine told me this:

So when I told him about that whole situation, he then told me this:

If this was a romcom, I’d take the advice, and I’d take the leap.

If this was a romantic tragedy, I’d take leap, I’d fall, my bones would break, and I’d never walk again.

But it’s real life… so as with most things, we’re somewhere in between.

But in the movies or the books, the writers dictate what happens next.

What about for us? For those of us stuck in real life?

Luckily, I’m not.

I finished writing the rest of the song a couple of minutes ago. I was looking at the moonlit night and I had my favorite memory of us playing in my mind. And the words just came to me. And they just felt right.

I’m tossing “Friendship” from the title.

Because this song isn’t about just friendship. Nor is it about a romantic relationship.

It’s about that limbo.

Because once in while you’re in limbo. A limbo that feels right. It feels right being friends with him out here just as much as it feels right being more in my mind.

I don’t want things to change inside or outside.

The key takeaway that I found in my friend’s text to me was this: that I need to decide that the limbo’s worse. But what if it’s not? What if I decide I’m happy like this? No. What if I realize I’m happy like this?

Sometimes, limbo’s bittersweet. But bittersweet is sometimes better than bitter and sweet.
