I had mentioned in my post “Through Suffering Comes Wisdom: Remedies for Sore Throats” how pretty much every Indian aunty who knows how to cook knows the recipe for rasam. Okay, it’s not just the aunties, or just the women for that matter. Any Indian who knows how to cook probably knows how to make rasam. It’s one of the easiest things to make.
Earlier today— yes, today —I came up with my own version that’s simple, quick to make, and delicious.
Note that this is meant for one person for one meal. If you want to make more, you’ll have to start multiplying the recipe.
Step 1: Boil Water
How much? That’s gonna depend on how strong you want the rasam to be. Anywhere from 1-and-½ to 2 cups is needed. 1-and-½ if you want it to be stronger. 2 if you don’t want it to be as strong.
Step 2: Add Powdered Ingredients
- MTR Madras Rasam Powder – 1 tsp
- MTR Special Garam Masala – ½ tsp
- Salt – 1 tsp
- Chili Powder – A Pinch
- What a pinch means to you will depend on how spicy you want it. Just don’t go overboard. Add a little, taste it, and if you want more, you can add more.
- Turmeric Powder – A Pinch
- Again, decide how much to use at your own discretion. But you really don’t want to go overboard on the turmeric. This is just to add a healthy kick to the rasam. Turmeric’s got anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it an excellent addition. Best thing is as long as you don’t go overboard on how much you use, it doesn’t mess with the taste of the food.
Step 3: Stir & Boil
Once you’ve added the above items, stir it all together and let everything boil for about five more minutes. Make sure to keep stirring every minute or two so the spices don’t settle and they mix well.

It made a delectable spicy meal when I mixed in some white rice.
After your rasam is done, you can sip it like soup, drink it like chai, or pour it over some rice like I did. White rice, jasmine, or basmati are all great options if you go for rice. You can also try it with other grains such as millets (which I know ’cause my dad enjoys it as a healthier alternative to white rice that’s lower on carbs).
However you choose to enjoy your rasam, if you try out my recipe, definitely take a photo, post it on your social media and link it in the comments here.
