I Like You Because I Like Me

My friend asked me why I like him so much. Good question. When I started to think of the reasons why, they seemed rather generic at first.

I mean, he checked all the boxes, right?

Deep voice, facial hair, preferred height, techie, we know my type…

Smart, funny, fun to be around, can hold a conversation. Again, we know my type.

So what’s different about this guy?

What is it about him that makes me want him so badly? That’s making me block out all the others. No joke, every time I’ve even attempted daydreaming about someone else, because why not, he swoops in and outshines them.

Why?

Because I’m me, instead of sleeping, I’m up, listening to music with my headphones on, pacing and dancing, daydreaming and I just figured it out.

Here’s why:

That’s what it is.

May not be in NY, may not be drunk, but as the song accurately conveys:

– It should be obvious but, I do NOT own nor intend any copyright infringement upon the lyrics in the image. They are from the song.
– I also do NOT own nor intend any copyright infringement upon the part of the image that includes “Lauv”, “I Like Me Better” and the flower. That’s the cover art for the song. Pulled it from Google. The specific image that I cropped to integrate into the image came this Pinterest page.

That’s what it was.

It’s one thing when someone says they like us. It’s another thing when we like who we are when we’re with them.

I like the fact that he didn’t just compliment me on my accomplishments but told me I completely earned the bragging rights even while so many others call me pretentious.

I like that I can play my music in his car and sing as much as I want.

I like that I can share my art with him which is important because as an artist, I need people in my life who are willing to listen to my songs and read my writing and look at my art.

I like that I can ramble as much as I want and make sense. Because as much as I like to write, I do like to talk. And I like writing letters but I don’t want to be needing to write a letter every time I need to have a serious or vulnerable conversation.

I like the version of myself that I am with him.

That’s what’s important in any kind of relationship – being able to be a version of yourself that you love. If you have to be someone different for the sake of the other person, major red flag!

This is honestly why Lauv’s lyrics work: because in order for two people to stay together for that long, a lifetime even, they need to be happy with who they are. If they’re miserable, or if one or both have to change who they are, it doesn’t mean much if they love each other.

Meanwhile, if two people who love each other are happy with who they are when they’re with the other person, that’s the start to them thriving in a lifelong relationship.
