To Like, To Hate, For Me, For You

Should you automatically like who your significant other likes? Should you automatically hate who they hate?

I’ve never been the type of person to form my opnions of other people based on others’. I’m that person that likes every single one of her teachers while they keep getting low ratings on RateMyProfessors. I don’t believe in the concept that just because one person doesn’t like you, the rest of the world shouldn’t either. You shouldn’t have to ‘choose’ when a couple breaks up or best friends start fighting. You are allowed to be impartial even when the people you love and the people they hate are involved.

So this morning when my boyfriend complains to me about a certain set of people in our lives that he doesn’t like and exactly why, why was my first thought to shake said people and ask if they were good in the head?

Meanwhile, there’s another couple I’ve known for a millenia in which the husband refuses to take sides in any situation concerning his wife. And I’ve always agreed with that husband. And I get it now.

Because it’s not all about how a significant other feels about other people.

It’s about who they are too.

People make mistakes. People can be real bitches when they want to be. But sometimes so can our sig. others.

But when your boyfriend’s the sweetest guy in the world and one of the most patient and he’s on the edge of losing it… not only do you take his side, you get upset with those who upset him. It’s not even that they’ve made him feel a certain way. It’s that they (A) refuse to admit it and (B) make you feel a certain way too.

But when your wife’s just as massive a bitch as they are, things change. You can trust how she feels. You just can’t trust her opinions of other people. She gets upset much too quick for everyone’s own good and loves misinterpreting others’ intentions.

Yeah… There’s a difference.

I believe that when judging people, we should judge them for ourselves, knowing all perspectives. We can’t make judgements solely based on other’s perceptions. But when it’s justified, it’s judtified to be upset at those who upset our loved ones.

Because we’re allowed to be selfish.

We’re allowed to feel protective.

All the same, we should always have and maintain our opinions.

So, again: Should you automatically like who your significant other likes? Should you automatically hate who they hate?

Hell, nah!

You should like who you like and hate you hate and sometimes the two of you will end up liking or hating the same people, circumstances, places, things, food, colors, music, movies, books or whatever else it is. And that’s okay. When you love each other, you make it work.
