Rule No. 1 of Being Happy

You all know how I have a soundtrack playing in the back of my mind twenty-four-seven. Song of the day:

A friend of mine said this to me about a year ago, a few days after I first started MML.
I thought he was so wise at the time. I Googled it this morning and it turns out he was paraphrasing a dialogue from The Interview.

But in that moment, they were the words I needed to hear, so props to him for pulling them out of the crevices of his mind.

And they were words I needed to remember this morning.

Let me tell you an interesting story: A girl (Girl 1) likes a guy. They share a mutual friend (Girl 2) who also has feelings for him. That friend and him have another mutual friend (Girl 3) who also has feelings for him. Girl 1 was the only one who had the interest in or the courage to pursue him.

Didn’t work.

Girl 1’s happily dating another slew of men and crushing on a couple of girls until she finally finds the one. And all should’ve been well. After all, she’s the one who got her heart broken (though that’s been resolved and there’s no hard feelings). Girl 2 comforted her as she cried over the heartbreak. Girl 3 and Girl 1 even had a couple of fun conversations but they barely knew each other.

Weren’t they all friends?

And now they don’t talk to Girl 1.

None of them do.

Which was fine.

But recently, Girl 1 found out that Girl 2 and 3 plain hate her and have been talking behind her back about her for a hot minute. Why? Because she had the guts to follow her heart?

I’ll admit – some of it was hear-say and I don’t do hear-say. But coupled with gut instinct?

It’s like this: I make no assumptions. I don’t do hearsay and I want the full story from all parties involved. But if I find proof? Proof that someone I used to call a friend is being petty and jealous?

I have to say, something profoundly hurts about a person not being honest about how they feel then getting upset for your actions in the midst of not knowing.

So what do I do if I find proof? Ask someone for forgiveness? Try to make them like me again? Fuck no.

All this being said… There are still some conversations I need to have before making up my mind.

Because even when reconilliation isn’t necessary, closure is.
